I’’ve got a little Acer EasyStore Windows Home Server that does backups every night. Always good to have a reminder to back stuff up, though.

That is a nice NAS. I need to get one to run a Plex/ahem acquiring of things device.

I'm still annoyed that MS discontinued WHS. Backup was way smoother and more efficient than any other product out there, at least as far as I can tell.

It has blue LEDs, so you know it’s good.

The box was sub-$100 but the HDD’s are where things can get pricey. Only running 4 1TB’s currently.

My htpc is my nas. It has 4 gb shared on two drives. To do it right I need to buy a small ssd and 2 4tb drives. That’s gonna cost me 300$. The rest of the box only cost 150, it’s almost five years old and after my upgrade to 1080p the processor is starting to struggle. Which means I may as well replace a bunch of other guts. That of course leaves me with the debate of if I want to go ultra low power and fan less or keep the box a bit more powerful. The whole thing starts to reek of 500$+ and what I have working FINE, for now.... I’m cheap and in denial.

Yeah, I don’t get it either. A person could use a Raspberry Pi, Windows 10 IoT edition, and a USB hard drive to do something interesting, but at that point the Pi’s networking becomes a bottleneck.

Make yourself a grocery list and keep it on standby until the current system fails or becomes too bogged down to function properly. Then you’ll feel better justifying the expenses.

But if your backup system isn’t plugged into a quality surge protector or UPS you might as well shoot yourself in the face.

Oh I’ve had a few build sheets in mind for a good 2 years now but then again nvidia has that new 900 series that purports great processing on low power and tdp the new 930 or 940 might fit the bill of course if the fanless 920 could do 4k that’d be compelling. Hey maybe intel will release iris on a budget chip, that’d be sweet. Maybe there’ll be a good 5 bay itx box with a fanless power supply.
Analysis paralysis, I have it. Haha

I wish my life was interesting enough to backup.
